Many people accused of a criminal offense often wonder why they should hire an attorney the very first time they are charged for a crime. Frequently, the State or Judge is not seeking jail time, so why waste money hiring an attorney just to try to avoid a little probation and adjudication? Is it not more than a little inconvenience?

The answer to the first question is simple. Any criminal conviction, regardless of how minor, can come back to haunt you later. Friends can run your records, as can potential employers, creditors, or immigration officials. A simple misdemeanor conviction may cost you employment, friendship, or residency. What may seem like a good deal when you first appear in court may have long term, painful consequences. The judges, state attorneys, and courtroom staff may encourage you to resolve your case without an attorney as it reduces their caseload.

What then, should you do? Will an attorney always make a difference? Quite honestly, no. But, if you have proper representation, you will know at the very least you are not being mistreated by the system. You will know that you are being treated fairly.
